Ice dams start in your attic

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms along the edge of your roof. It traps melting snow behind it, and that water backs up under your shingles. The cause is almost always heat escaping into the attic and warming the roof deck.

The lasting fix is not heat cable or a hammer. It is a cold, dry attic: air sealing to stop the heat, insulation to slow it and balanced attic ventilation to carry away what gets through. As roofers, we work on all three from the attic to the ridge.

Illustration of winter ice buildup at a roof edge

How an ice dam forms

Heat escaping from the living space can warm the roof deck and start a freeze-thaw cycle.

Warm air from your living space leaks into the attic through ceiling gaps.
The attic warms the underside of the roof deck.
Snow on the upper roof melts and runs down toward the eaves.
The eaves are colder, so the water refreezes into a ridge of ice.
More meltwater pools behind the ice and works its way under the shingles.

Signs your attic ventilation isn't working

Large icicles or ice dams along the gutters every winter
Frost on roofing nails or the underside of the roof deck
Dark stains or mold on the attic sheathing
A musty smell in the attic
Ceiling stains after a thaw
Upstairs rooms that overheat in summer
Shingles curling or wearing out early

How balanced attic ventilation works

A healthy attic breathes. Cool, dry air comes in low at the soffit vents. Warm, moist air leaves high at the ridge. That steady flow keeps the roof deck close to the outdoor temperature in winter and vents heat in summer.

Building codes generally call for 1 square foot of net free vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor, or 1 per 300 when intake and exhaust are balanced. Most problems we find are not a lack of vents. They are blocked soffit vents, mixed exhaust types that short-circuit the airflow and bathroom fans that dump moist air into the attic.

When we add insulation, we install baffles at the eaves so the soffit vents stay open.

Roof ventilation options compared

Exhaust vents only work when they are paired with enough intake at the soffits.

Vent typeHow it worksBest forWatch out for
Ridge ventContinuous vent along the peak, paired with soffit intakeMost gable roofsNeeds enough soffit intake to work

Ventilation protects your roof and its warranty

An overheated, damp attic wears shingles out from below. Shingle manufacturers generally require proper attic ventilation for full warranty coverage. As a Malarkey Certified Premium Contractor and an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, we install ventilation to the manufacturer’s requirements on every roof.

If you are planning a roof replacement, we correct ventilation in the same project. See our certifications for details.

What to do if you have an ice dam right now

Do not climb on an icy roof or chip at the ice. Chipping cracks shingles, and falls from icy roofs are a real risk. If water is coming inside, call us. We can stop active leaks and handle emergency roof repair across Carmel.

Heat cables can keep a channel open, but they treat the symptom. Once the weather breaks, schedule an attic inspection so it does not happen again next winter.

Attic ventilation and ice dam FAQ

How do I prevent ice dams?

Keep the roof deck cold. Air seal the attic floor, insulate to R-49 to R-60 and balance soffit intake with ridge exhaust.

Do heat cables fix ice dams?

Heat cables can keep a channel open, but they treat the symptom. Air sealing, insulation and ventilation stop the heat loss that causes ice dams.

How do I know if my attic has enough ventilation?

Watch for frost on the roof deck in winter, a very hot attic in summer and moisture stains on the sheathing. We measure intake and exhaust during a free inspection.

Should my bathroom fan vent into the attic?

No. Bath and kitchen fans should vent outside. Venting into the attic adds moisture that can cause frost, mold and ice dams.

How much does attic ventilation cost in Carmel?

Attic ventilation cost depends on roof design, existing intake and exhaust, access and the corrections needed. Air sealing, baffles and insulation are quoted separately when needed. Your free inspection includes a written, itemized quote before any work starts.
